- Project Recess VR Game R&D - Environments and Minigames

Project Recess was an unannounced project exploring the concept of a multiplayer VR game, where around 50 people at a time could run around a virtual playground and play games inspired by elementary school recess activities.

For this project, I sketched out concepts for everything from mini games, to characters, to level design possibilities, keeping tech constraints and the need for simple geometry, art stylization, and low detail in mind along the way.

The game was intended to have about 50 players in a single level at any given time, so I sketched this concept to give the team a visual of how many people could potentially be seen onscreen at once.

I concepted lots of possible directions for schoolyard-inspired multiplayer minigames, including a "The floor is lava" level that must be navigated with pogo sticks, and a bumper car level that also had players trying to smash pinatas :D

My concepts here explored things like jumping off a swing to sail through a giant tic tac toe board, and players launching each other into the air to fly on giant paper airplanes, popping balloons for points along the way.

My concepts here explored things like playing tether ball with a rocket, hopscotch with some squares being trap doors, and giant loop de loop slide that launches players high in to the air through giant floating rings to gain points.

Here's a video of my process for one of my minigame concepts above.

In order to allow lots of players in one space while automatically cutting down on how many players could be seen onscreen at once, I sketched out ideas where I created level concepts as large spheres or cylinders.
